Summary.

Transforming Virgin Atlantic’s operational leadership and management through a mindset of Growth.

Challenge.

Ramping up operations following the pandemic by supporting operational leaders in the face of uncertainty and disengagement.

They were working in a complex, ambiguous and volatile industry at a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty. Leaders needed to be capable of prioritising what mattered including the wellbeing, resilience, development and performance of their teams. Mindset was key.

The development also had to be practice-able by providing practical tools, resources and tangible steps so that leaders could immediately put their learning into action.

Approach.

Our Mindset to Growth programme was selected to transform middle managers/leaders and their teams. The programme was delivered virtually initially using innovative experiential-learning online content developed specifically to meet the challenges of the pandemic.

They also needed a programme that could scale up to enable all leaders and managers to turn up more consistently from Growth. The approach included licensing two internal practitioners so that could also deliver Mindset to Growth programmes at scale.

Outcomes.

We are seeing increases in the number of people with a mindset of Growth. Of more importance is that this is enabling increases in their habits of Self Responsibility and Personal Resilience, i.e. shifting from feeling disempowered and overwhelmed to taking responsibility and providing solutions to challenges. Data from our online Growth Performance gauge activity also highlighted that participants were better at managing their energy to be in Growth more consistently.

“What I learnt from the programme is that I need to slow down more … allow people to get there before I do … to find those solutions and then work with them on those solutions.”

“It is super critical for a leader to realise that the workload is going to be what it is, accepting it and just being a bit more level-headed, a bit more relaxed and less flustered, and that will support the team.”

“[It] is an internal process of self discovery … a check-in with yourself, your leadership style, your own motivations … your team will thank you for it.”

This success led to the development of an in-house capability who are now delivering in-person sessions.
